Intent

All children deserve equal access to high-quality physical education and the chance to explore and take part in a variety of sports and physical activities. At Corpus Christi, our Physical Education curriculum offers children a broad and engaging range of activities that help develop their physical skills, strength, and agility. We are dedicated to nurturing a love of movement and sport, encouraging children to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Implementation

  • Schools should focus their PE and sport premium spending on making improvements in the following five key areas:
  • Increasing confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sporting activities
  • Increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sporting activities
  • Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement
  • Offer a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils
  • Increasing participation in competitive sport

Gym Run

Children in the Juniors will participate in The Gym Run programme. This is a strategy which aims to develop fitness and physical literacy in schools. Children will complete five challenges inside one lesson to achieve one of eight graded physical fitness badges. Each badge is an achievement and a positive step to inform coaches on what action can be taken for pupils to reach the next stage in their physical fitness and health journey.

Swimming

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in KS1 or KS2. At Corpus Christi, all Year 3 and Year 4 children participate in swimming lessons and are taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres ● use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke

In Year 6, the children participate in Swim Safety lessons and are taught to:

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Healthy Schools

We are proud to have received the Healthy Schools Award, reflecting our commitment to promoting regular physical activity each week. Our curriculum also includes learning focused on healthy eating and active travel, supporting children's overall well-being.

Enrichment

Each year, we enter children into a variety of competitive tournaments, matches, and races. We also run a range of after-school sports clubs, giving children the opportunity to further pursue their passion for specific sports.

Impact

Our PE curriculum offers children the opportunity to explore a wide range of sports, including mainstream activities, helping them build the confidence to stay involved in sport throughout secondary school and later life. We believe our curriculum will inspire a lifelong love of physical activity, encouraging children to maintain healthy, active lifestyles as they grow. It is essential for children to take part in competitive activities, as this helps them develop their skills, team work and build resilience.
